I had my son, Liam, when I was just 18. While I was young, he became my whole world. Unfortunately, his father left when he found out I was expecting, and I was left to raise Liam alone.
Then, I met Ethan. He became a significant part of my life and Liam’s, treating my son as though he was his own. It was clear to me that Ethan was the one, and we eventually got married.
The Honeymoon and My MIL’s Care
After our wedding, Ethan and I decided to take our much-anticipated honeymoon. Ethan suggested that his mother, Angela, take care of Liam while we were away. To be honest, I wasn’t entirely comfortable with leaving my son with her, but Ethan reassured me that his mother loved Liam like her own grandchild. Reluctantly, I agreed.

The Disturbing Phone Call
Just four days into our trip, I received a phone call from Liam, who was only six years old at the time. His voice sounded distressed, and my heart sank. “Mom, don’t do this to me,” he choked out.
“Liam, what do you mean? Are you okay?” I asked, panic setting in.
That’s when he told me that Angela had told him I would “give him away” if he didn’t behave. My little boy was terrified, thinking I had abandoned him. I immediately reassured him that it wasn’t true, but he was so upset that he couldn’t stop crying.
I told Ethan what had happened, and we immediately decided to cut our trip short and go back home.
Confronting Angela
When we returned and confronted Angela, she claimed that “fear builds character” and brushed off the impact her words had on my son. She said it was harmless to threaten him with adoption to make him behave, not understanding the emotional damage she caused.
I was done with her. I couldn’t let her undermine my relationship with Liam, and I wasn’t willing to let her hurt him anymore.
Moving Forward
Ethan was furious with his mother as well, and the tension between us and her was undeniable. It took some time for Liam to fully recover from the fear and confusion caused by Angela’s threats. For months, he refused to sleep alone, always needing reassurance that I wasn’t going anywhere.
Today, Liam is doing much better. He knows, without a doubt, that I am here for him—always and forever.
