Elephant Rescued After Over 80 Years in Shackles

Captivity is one of the cruelest forms of life for animals, and sadly, many endure it because of human exploitation. One such animal is an elephant named Grandma Somboon, who spent over 80 years shackled and forced to carry tourists and perform in shows. Taken from the wild as a young calf, Somboon lived a life of hard labor and neglect until the Save Elephant Foundation in Thailand stepped in to rescue her.

For years, Somboon’s life was filled with suffering. But eventually, the Save Elephant Foundation, an organization dedicated to fighting for elephants held in captivity, noticed her plight and set out to bring her to a better life. The mission was clear: it was time for Somboon to be freed from her chains and to finally rest. The rescue team shared their mission on Facebook, saying, “It’s time for Grandma to be cared for well and allowed to rest.”

After years of enduring hardship, Somboon was successfully transported to the Elephant Nature Park sanctuary, where she could live the life she had always deserved. But despite her release, Somboon’s health had been severely affected by the years of captivity. She arrived at the sanctuary emaciated, severely dehydrated, missing a tooth, and with blurry eyes. The toll of her past life was evident, and her journey to full recovery would take time.

When elephants are rescued, they often experience fear and paranoia, taking weeks to gain enough trust to lie down. However, Grandma Somboon surprised everyone. Exhausted from her long and painful life, the moment she arrived at the sanctuary, she immediately sought out a pile of sand and laid down to rest. For the first time in 80 years, she could sleep peacefully without the weight of shackles on her ankles.

Her rescuers had worried about how she would adjust to her new life, but Somboon quickly proved them wrong. Every day, she made remarkable progress, showing signs of recovery and comfort in her new environment. The transformation was incredible—Somboon was no longer weighed down by chains, and for the first time in decades, she was able to experience the joy of freedom.

Her journey reminds us of the importance of animal rescue and the impact we can have on improving the lives of those who are suffering.

We’re incredibly grateful for the rescue groups who give neglected and abused animals, like Somboon, a second chance at life. Please share this inspiring story with your family and friends on Facebook to help raise awareness about the importance of animal welfare.
