Peter and Sally, high school sweethearts, shared a bond so strong that they promised to meet each other again, no matter the circumstances, ten years later in Times Square. Their love was one of those rare connections, the kind that lasts forever, even when life pulls people in different directions.
A Tearful Goodbye
Before Sally left for Europe to pursue her dream of studying abroad, she and Peter shared one last dance, holding onto each other like it was their last moment together. Sally, teary-eyed, whispered, “What would I do without you?” But Peter, with a heavy heart, reassured her, “Sally, you’re destined for great things. I won’t be the one to hold you back.”
In that moment, as they promised to meet again in ten years, Sally gave Peter a yellow umbrella, a symbol of their love and their promise. “No matter what happens,” she said, “I’ll be there with the umbrella.” Peter squeezed her hand and promised, “Ten years from now, on Christmas Eve, I’ll be there, waiting with the yellow umbrella.”

The Passage of Time
As the years passed, Sally and Peter kept in touch, but eventually, the letters stopped coming. Peter’s love for Sally never wavered. Every year, as Christmas Eve approached, he held onto the hope that Sally would keep her promise and meet him in Times Square, just as they had planned.
When the day finally arrived, Peter stood near the towering Christmas tree, scanning the crowd for the familiar face of the girl he had loved so deeply. As the minutes turned into an hour, he refused to give up. Then, just when he thought he might have been stood up, a tiny voice called his name from behind.
The Unexpected Encounter
Peter turned around to see a young girl, holding a yellow umbrella, standing before him. Her eyes were wide and familiar. She looked up at him and nervously said, “I’m Betty… and she’s not coming.”
Confused and shocked, Peter asked, “What do you mean? Who are you?” But deep down, he already knew.
“I’m your daughter,” the girl said quietly, her green eyes filling with tears.
Peter’s world spun. “My daughter?” he asked, barely able to speak. Before he could process it further, a man and a woman approached them.
The woman, with tears in her eyes, introduced herself and said, “Hi, Peter. We’ve heard so much about you. We are Sally’s parents.”
Peter’s heart sank. “Where’s Sally? Why is this girl calling me her father?”
It was then that Sally’s mother broke down, revealing the heart-wrenching truth. “Peter, Sally’s gone. She died of cancer two years ago. She didn’t want you to know because she didn’t want to burden you.”

A Heartbroken Reunion
Peter felt his entire world shatter. Sally, the love of his life, was gone, leaving him with a daughter he never knew existed. But as he processed the grief, a flicker of joy also filled his heart. Betty, his daughter, was now a part of him, a living memory of Sally.
Sally’s father handed Peter a diary—Sally’s diary. In it, she had written about the promise they made, about meeting in Times Square with the yellow umbrella, and how she had hoped Peter would be there for her, even in her absence.
Peter hugged Betty tightly, swearing never to let her go. She shared stories of her mother, and Peter, though filled with grief, was thankful to finally learn more about Sally’s life.
Though Sally was gone, Peter now had Betty, a piece of Sally that would always be with him.
A New Beginning
The process of bringing Betty to live with him in the States was long and difficult, but eventually, she moved in with her father. They made trips to visit her grandparents in France, but Betty quickly became Peter’s world.

In the end, although Peter never got to see Sally again, he found solace in the daughter they had together. Betty brought joy and light into his life, and with her, he would honor the love that he and Sally once shared.
