What began as a joyful birthday celebration ended in unimaginable tragedy when 8-year-old Joshua Dunbar died just hours after his party — from a helium balloon meant to bring joy. Now, his grieving mother is turning her pain into purpose, pleading with other parents to reconsider one common party decoration that ended her son’s life.
A Celebration Turned Nightmare
On April 27, 2024, Joshua was celebrating his 8th birthday — a day filled with balloons, laughter, and dreams for the year ahead. But hours later, his parents found him unresponsive in his room, a large helium-filled balloon shaped like the number 8 over his face.
Despite efforts from paramedics and doctors, Joshua could not be revived. His heart had stopped — the cause later confirmed to be asphyxiation from helium inhalation.
“I held his hand and told him, ‘If your angel wings are there, you can go in peace. Mummy and Daddy are here,’” said Carly, Joshua’s heartbroken mother. “And within minutes, he was gone.”
How It Happened: The Dangers of Helium Balloons
Though helium is not toxic, it displaces oxygen in enclosed spaces. According to Coroner Andre Rebello, Joshua’s cause of death was “consistent with asphyxia involving a helium balloon.” The little boy had likely been playing, unaware that breathing helium instead of air would cut off the oxygen his body needed to survive.
“He was a little boy in his room, playing… It had fatal consequences,” the coroner said, calling it “one of the most tragic of accidents.”
This heartbreaking incident underscores how something as innocent-looking as a balloon can become a deadly hazard without proper awareness or supervision.

A Mother’s Plea: “Stick to Air-Filled Balloons”
Devastated by guilt, Carly is now using her voice to prevent other families from experiencing the same unbearable loss.
“Please trust me when I say — do not buy your children helium balloons,” she wrote in a viral Facebook post. “Every day since, I’ve hated myself for buying that balloon that took our boy. Air-filled balloons look just as nice, and they don’t take your child away.”
Her message is clear: “If just one child is saved, Joshua’s death won’t be in vain.”
When Celebration Turns into Grief: Know Your Rights
In the wake of such tragedies, families are often left not just with grief, but with questions about safety, liability, and even insurance claims. While no lawsuit can bring a child back, some families may explore options with a wrongful death lawyer to understand what happened, and how to prevent future tragedies — especially when products or packaging lack safety warnings.
If you or someone you know has lost a loved one due to a party-related accident, there may be grounds for:
- Accidental death insurance claims
- Product liability investigations
- Grief counseling and treatment coverage
Knowing your legal rights and recovery options can help families process both emotionally and financially.
A Life-Saving Message Every Parent Needs to Hear
Joshua’s story is more than a tragedy. It’s a call to action for every parent, teacher, and caregiver to rethink what we often consider “safe” for children.
“It’s torture. It doesn’t get easier. But if even a few parents listen, and don’t buy helium balloons, then that’s one more child who gets to live,” Carly said.
As we plan birthdays and celebrations, let’s remember that child safety starts with awareness. Consider air-filled balloons, supervise playtime, and speak to your kids about the hidden risks around them.
