When rescuers first found him, he didnāt even look like a bear.
His tiny, frail body was bald. His skin, dry and infected. His eyes, filled with fear. But today? Heās the definition of resilience ā and the transformation is nothing short of extraordinary.
Meet Black Bear Cub 24-3926, who went from near death to a full-hearted comeback at Gold Country Wildlife Rescue in North Auburn, California. His story is a powerful reminder of what can happen when dedicated animal care, patience, and love come together.
š Abandoned, Bald, and Clinging to Life
It was December 2024 when wildlife officials found him alone in El Dorado County ā severely dehydrated, anemic, and suffering from a brutal skin condition. At only 20 pounds, he was half the weight he shouldāve been, orphaned and barely clinging to life.
āHe didnāt even resemble a bear,ā said Chelsea Engberg, GCWRās marketing and outreach manager. āIt was heartbreaking.ā
But thanks to life-saving treatment, a detailed care plan, and sheer determination, this little cub was given a second chance.
š A Long Road to Recovery
With expert support and medical care, the bear began his recovery journey. His face ā once raw and bare ā slowly started to sprout new fuzz.
GCWR shared hopeful updates, cheering over each milestone. In time, the cubās personality began to emerge. He played in a kiddie pool, swung on a firehose hammock, and even began reclaiming his wild instincts ā all essential for a return to the wild.
āWatching him enjoy his enrichment toys and ignore humans is a big success,ā shared Dana Fasolette, Director of Animal Care.
š» A Complete Transformation
By February 2025, the bear looked unrecognizable. Thick fur, healthy eyes, and a playful attitude replaced the frightened, sick creature they once met.
Though hopes were high for a return to the wild, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife later determined it wasnāt safe. The cub would instead be transferred to a forever sanctuary, where heāll live protected and well-cared-for.
In a touching May 13th Facebook update, GCWR posted a stunning new photo of the cub, now strong and thriving.
āIf youāve not seen this cub before, he came to us late last year sick and almost completely without fur⦠Heāll soon receive his final exam and vaccinations before heading to his forever home.ā
