By the age of six, she was already smoking marijuana, and by 12, she was introduced to meth, followed by crack at 14. The abuse continued into her teenage years, including a traumatic experience of being raped at 16, which led her to attempt suicide at 17. By the time she was 23, Ginny was addicted to heroin.
As she reflected on her troubled past, Ginny acknowledged the violence and chaos that defined her life. “I am the person you used to clutch your bag when I walked by you,” she admitted, describing herself as a person who had succumbed to addiction and criminal behavior. Her life on the streets involved robbing drug dealers at gunpoint, a path that led to numerous legal issues and 17 felony convictions.

A Life of Hopelessness and Addiction
Ginny’s addiction drove her to the streets, where she felt hopeless and trapped. “You would rather be dead than alive,” she explained, describing the emotional numbness and despair that defined her existence. The cycle of addiction and crime continued until her final arrest in 2012 when she was caught in a stolen truck after evading police.
But this time, it wasn’t the end. This arrest marked a turning point in Ginny’s life. Desperate for a chance to break free from her past, Ginny pleaded to be placed in the Drug Diversion Court program. It was in rehab that she finally began to understand how to truly change her life.
Turning Her Life Around
After completing rehab, Ginny began her journey toward redemption. Determined to put her past behind her, she worked for seven years with the Post Prison Education Program, helping others who had been through similar struggles. It was during this time that she found inspiration to go back to school. Ginny realized how much time she had wasted and discovered a passion for learning.
At the age of 47, Ginny enrolled in South Seattle College and later applied to the University of Washington. Her hard work and dedication paid off when she was awarded a Martin Honor Scholarship to attend UW, where she studied political science. Ginny excelled in her studies, proving that with determination, anything is possible.
